I would use this website in a classroom by providing a fill in the blank worksheet and having the students take a virtual tour to find the answers. This website also provides elaborate pictures that are good accommodations for ESOL students.

This book is designed for young readers to introduce the renowned explorer, Ponce de Leon. This book has an abundance of pictures and is an easy read. I would more than likely use this book for a whole group read aloud.

This book provides many pictures that were actually taken by the author in the beautiful city of St. Augustine. Each picture has an explanation of where and when it was taken. This book could be used for students to see St. Augustine in real-life form.


Florida: Social Studies for a Changing World
Author: Jane Gilmer Landers
This is a textbook that has information about St. Augustine. For example, the population of the city, location, landmarks, popular places, etc. This textbook would be great to incorporate into any lesson regarding St. Augustine and Spanish Florida.


African Americans in Florida

This book takes a look into St. Augustine from another light, dealing with slavery and The Civil Rights Movement. This book would be a great reference to integrate into a lesson because slavery is a topic most fourth grade Social Studies topics include and this book ties St. Augustine into that topic.

Journeys with Florida’s Indians

Author: Kelley G. Weitzel
This book blends alternating factual and fictional chapters. The factual chapters contain maps, historical engravings, and modern illustrations. Then, the fictional chapters are narrated by Tenerife, a fictional Timucua Indian kidnapped by the Spanish as a child, whose tales about Florida’s native cultures reflect his own escape and adventures on his journey home.

America’s Real First Thanksgiving
Author: Robyn Gioia
This historical picture book presents an account of the first Thanksgiving celebration held in St. Augustine, Florida, along with historical events preceding this occasion. In addition, this book contains illustrations and photographs with detailed captions, a timeline, a glossary, and a recipe for Cocido, which is a type of bean soup that was served at the first Thanksgiving. There is a teacher’s manual to accompany the book.


Ponce De Leon: Juan Ponce De Leon Searches for the Fountain of Youth

This book is a biography of the Spanish explorer who first came to the New World with Columbus, went on to become governor of Puerto Rico, and later came to Florida looking for the Fountain of Youth. In addition, this book contains photographs, drawings, maps, timelines, and highlighted words with a corresponding glossary.

Life in St. Augustine
Author: Sally Senzell Isaac
This nonfiction book provides geographic and historical information regarding life in St. Augustine, Florida, from 1513 to 1845, which includes the housing, food, clothing, schools, and everyday activities of the settlers, as well as their interactions with native people. In addition, this book provides photographs, drawings, as well as a recipe for typical food eaten during this period.

Voices in St. Augustine

This historical fiction book is about a thirteen-year-old boy named Joey Johnson. Joey hears voices, which end up leading him on an adventure to discover his connections to the past. The setting of the book takes place in past and present St. Augustine, Florida.
